A hotel management student from UiTM Dungun, Terengganu, outstaged six other contestants to emerge as the winner of the Nestle Culinary Arts Award.
Tariq Iskandar Mohd Saleh, 21, was named the winner of the contest which was being held for the fourth consecutive year.
The three-day contest was jointly organised with Malaysia Association of Hotels (MAH) and Chefs Association of Malaysia (CAM) with the objective of elevating the standard of culinary arts in the country.
The best: Tariq with the challenge trophy and a mock-up of his RM1,500 prize.
It was also aimed at recognising the young talents of culinary arts students, especially top students from the culinary art studies diploma programme.
The six participants were from Sunway University College, Taylor’s College, The Legend International College of Hospitality and Tourism, Food Institute of Malaysia (FIM), Nilai International College University and Pusat Teknologi dan Pengurusan Lanjutan (PTPL).
“The highlight of the award is the six-month apprenticeship and mentorship at Le Meridien under the guidance of chef Antonne Rodriquez,’’ said Samuel Cheah who is the secretary-general of MAH.
Over the three days, the participants were given different tasks that tested their skills, creativity and passion for the art.
The winner walked away with RM1,500, a challenge trophy and a cerficate endorsed by CAM and MAH.
Tariq, who was overjoyed after receiving the prize, said he was surprised with the result of the competition.
“I was hopeful but never thought that I’d be able to win this one.
“This has given me the motivation to work harder in pursuit of becoming a successful chef in the future,’’ he said.
